If you are one those people, we hope you will share some of those memories with us by commenting or by posting to Skeleton Lake History in the Making blog.
An Example
I've been talking to several fellow cottagers and Lake area residents, over the past several months, about their recollections on the early cottage resorts that sprang up around the lake - mainly in the first half of the last century. My conversations with them, which I found both fascinating and very often full of humourous incidents, yielded the following list of resorts, campgrounds, and camp names:Craigellachie |
Newport House
Newport Adventure Camp or Camp Newport (operated by the Salvation Army)
Camp Ramah
Camp Winnebagoe (an earlier incarnation of Camp Ramah)
Camp Kwasind
Camp Cheboygan (earlier name of Camp Kwasind)
Wilson's Lodge
Craigellachie ( seen in the photo above)
Keewane Lodge (late 40's int the 50's - burned down)
Maple Bay Camp Ground
Simolean Beach Lodge (1920's and 30's in Simolean Bay)
Muskoka Hunting and Fishing Club (1932-34 in Simolean Bay)
Do any of you folks out there have any memories, photos, or information to share on any of these places? If so, we would really appreciate your comments....

Hi Ken - great idea - I'll like it on Facebook and post a link on SLCO website
ReplyDeleteKen Reese has copies of most of our(Bullen/Wilson, Clark, Hohwart,Baumgartner) family's historical pictures of our ancestors on Duck Island including a picture of "Shanty Island" with the shanty.
DeleteThe author of the surprises of Wilson's Lodge also contacted my Mom and has pictures and quotes.
Last year Cary DeLoye published our history into his own special book. Talk to him; he's a treasure of information.
Thanks Bonnie - Ken Reese and I are working on the history book together
DeleteHi Bonnie: Have been talking to Cary a few times. He has let me read his history and has let me take some of the photos.
DeleteOther than Boake's sawmill on Jeff Crocker's lot that burned in 1908, have you any info on sawmill's along your shore. It has been suggested that there may have be two, they were small, but were all gone by the 1930's. Cary was not aware of any.
Ken.
Bonnie: Keep in touch with the author Lenore Young. Would like to see her photos and hear her quotes.
DeleteKen, where can people find this Blog site? What is the Comment as profile? Is the blog available on www.skeletonlake.ca?
ReplyDeleteI think if we can increase use of your blog and use of the facebook page it will help increase membership. I think most lake residents don't know about either. Cary DeLoye
There is now a link to the Blog on the SLCO website - and you can always click the "Share it on Facebook or Twitter button on the Post above" to help spread the word...

Hello, I am a member of Rama Reserve and our people use to believe Skeleton Lake was a place of bad spirits and omens. Check out the muskoka archeological reports. They are downloadable as a PDF. It gives the reason behind the name Skeleton Lake. I am currently working on a mapping project of our lands and original names which include Skeleton Lake. Hope this helps.

Hi there, back in the middle 60s and 70s my parents were great friends with Marg and Ed Gracey,{and all their children} the owners of Maple Bay Camp, on Skeleton Lake . I spent literally every other weekend up north at the camp winter, summer, sprig and fall. We had 4 kids in our family and we had a samll traier that we used all year long, sometimes in the winter we wouldnt be able to get down the rd so my dad would unload the truck and slowly snowmobile all the kids and supplies for the weekend in one by one, once I remember when Ed broke his leg my dad snowmobiled him in on a tobaggan! nothing stopped us, my dad loved to ice fish, back then ice fishing huts were for whimps, we sat out on the seat of our sleds, waiting and waiting, I will never forget all the fun we had up there as kids, Marg and Ed were great, they were the right kind of people to own a campground, Ed used to drive his tractor around the campsites and let us kids ride along on the wagon he was towing behind, at night it seemed there was always someone who could play a guitar and sing and most everyone at the camp would gather and Ed would always say sing something for the children...I miss the place, I think it operates as a cottage rental now, my parents and the Graceys have all passed but what a great childhood they provided for all of us. I have pictures galore if anyone is interested email me at traceyr660@gmail.com
