Steam Tug on Skeleton Lake

Cary DeLoye has a photo of this old steam powered, side wheeler that was on Skeleton Lake hauling lumber for his parent's cottage. Bert Shea mentions that Briese had a tug "the Saucy Jim" that pulled his log booms on Skeleton Lake. Is this the side wheeler the Saucy Jim or was there a second tug on the lake?

  1. It appears that this photo id of a simple version of an "Alligator Tug Boat" was used by Newport House in the early 1900's to transport goods but also to tour their guests around the lake. George Stephens, then his son Dave owned Newport House in this period. Associated with the lodge was a small sawmill and perhaps the lumber on the front of the boat was being delivered from their sawmill.

The early versions of the Alligators were steam powered and had the side paddle wheels. They later changed to gas/diesil engines and screw props. There were many versions of these boats/vessels used primarily by the logging industry to pull their booms of logs to the mills, then to sort the logs in the millpond and push them to the jack ladder for sawing.
